The Veterans Affairs (VA) Facility Management School (FMS) is committed to strengthening and fortifying its facility management (FM) personnel and providing them with the educational resources necessary for Federal Building Personnel Training Act (FBPTA)" External link to a government website compliance.  To help fulfill this mission, FMS is providing training through the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) to enhance the skills of the FM workforce and create a more comprehensive and structured approach to employee development credentials and training.

This program offers professional development and continuing education opportunities through online certification programs.  The certification programs include:

  • IFMA - Facilities Management Professional (FMP®)
  • IFMA - Sustainability Facility Professional (SFP®)
  • IFMA - Certified Facility Manager (CFM®)

Through this program, the VA FM staff will be eligible to take one of these training and certification programs through the Facilities Management School.  The FMP®, SFP®, and CFM® programs include e-learning™ and course material sent directly to you.  The CFM® certification program requires five years of experience.

When you are ready to get started on any training/credential, download and complete the Student Information Form.  Send your completed form via email to the Facilities Management School at

DOL-OSHA Construction Safety Completion Card Online Training

FMS has brought back the DOL OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety online training for VA personnel who need training prior to their work on a construction site.  This resource provides the DOL OSHA Construction Safety Completion card at the end of the training.  The OSHA 30-hour courses provide instruction in a variety of general construction safety and health standards.  This course covers topics that include:  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Lead and Crystalline Silica, and Asbestos.  Register for an account to request training by sending an email to

MEDGAS ASSE 6000 Series Certifications (online or instructor-led training)

FMS is pleased to offer online and instructor training in Medical Gas Systems.  The ASSE 6000 Medical Gas Certification Programs provide individuals with the training, written examinations, and practical examinations to earn official ASSE 6000 certification(s) necessary to ensure that the individual has met the requirements of the ASSE Series 6000 Professional Qualifications Standard and are technically competent as well as experienced to perform these tasks.  For MEDGAS ASSE 6010, 6020, and 6040 certifications, students must meet practical work experience requirements. Students must provide documentation to verify their work experience to receive certification, which can be in the form of a letter from their supervisor or a peer professional that attests to their experience. Students without the required experience may attend training while working towards fulfilling the experience requirements.  Upon completion of training, the student will earn a certificate of completion that may be presented as successful completion of education requirements to earn certification after satisfying the experience requirement.

ASSE 6000 Re-Certification

This is a 4-hour program that will grant re-certification of any currently held ASSE 6000 certification.

ASSE 6005 Medical Gas Systems Specialist

The Medical Gas Systems Specialist is designed for a variety of individuals that require general knowledge in the proper design, installation, use and maintenance of medical gas and vacuum systems.  No experience required.

ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer

This certification is for Medical Gas Systems Installers is for individuals who perform installation with standard medical gas piping.  Four years of documented experience installing piped medical gas systems required.

ASSE 6020 Medical Gas Systems Inspector

The Medical Gas Systems Inspector certification is designed for individuals who require more specialized knowledge in order to successfully inspect medical gas systems.  Students will also be given a basic understanding of the application, operation, and code requirements of all materials, components, and equipment that are used in medical gas systems.  Two years experience in the field of medical gas systems required.

ASSE 6040 Medical Gas Maintenance Personnel

This certification is Medical Gas Maintenance Personnel, which is for those who require more refined knowledge to conduct maintenance on medical gas systems.  One year experience in the field of medical gas systems required.
